Does this robot have a heart? Japanese startup Vinclu just released a virtual assistant called Gatebox which is a cylindrical transparent tube the size of a coffee maker. The device comes with microphones, cameras, and sensors, and can be connected to various home appliances. A holographic anime assistant lives inside the tube. She can recognize you the owner and interact with you on a personal level. She can wake you up in the morning, remind you of things to do, and even welcome you back when you return home from work. Who are the targeted users? Of course the young, lonely salarymen! Well, I still prefer to hear the voice of my wife. Here's the post.

The best internet companies have spoken
The internet has disrupted corporate China and many internet startups have become the new leaders. Alibaba is now the largest company in China by market cap, and five out of ten of the largest Chinese firms were founded on the internet.
When major brands lead, the rest follow. Therefore, it pays to study the domain name preference of the best internet companies in China. Here, the report "2016 年中国互联网企业100 强" (2016 Top 100 Internet Companies in China) provides an excellent source for our study.
I entered company names from this report into Baidu, found their domain names, and then analyzed them. Because I have already studied the second generation of internet startups in my July 15
and July 16
posts of last year, I decided to compare the two results so that we understand both the current state as well as the future trend in domain preference.
Look at the results.
|Extension||Top 100||New 300|
The best internet companies in China have spoken: it's .com. The second generation have also spoken: it's .com as well. Chinese companies prefer .com, followed by .cn. The 88% (Top 100) and 76% (New 300) .com shares give us confidence that the .com trend will not go away soon. The lower .com share in the New 300 may be due to the affordability issue and less need to go global, and may suggest that startups will upgrade to .com when they become bigger.
Now let's look at the type of names they prefer.
|Type||Top 100|| New 300|
Pinyin is the number one choice for both current and next generations of internet companies. Now compare the two columns. because the Top 100 companies can afford, many of them go for acronym or numeric names -- such as JD.com and 360.com -- which better position them as global players. On the contrary, they don't like less quality names such as Pinyin+English and Pinyin+Number, resulting in the much lower shares when compared with New 300 companies.
Finally, many domain names used by the Top 100 companies still have inferior quality -- for example Keyvr.cc, Net263.com, and Cnfol.com. This indicates that the domain market is still in its early stage and, therefore, large growth can still be expected.
